The book I read to research this post was Data Driven Marketing For Dummies which is a very interesting book which I read at

This book is a combination of marketing, social media marketing and web marketing rolled into one. It's also often referred to as database marketing and is about using the data you get from statistics, marketing tools like reward cards, online tools like e-newsletter lists and websites like email sites and social media, and using it to sell stuff. Nowadays on the internet there is a huge amount of data from sites like facebook that can be data mined. The 2 biggest data mining providers are

https://spss.com & https://sas.com

In addition there is data like the census which is often free and is useful for working out the demographics of potential customers. There is also paying for placement on search engines and shopping sites like google & price runner. One thing that is on the way out is blanket advertising whether that be sending direct mail to everyone in a certain postal sector or having sales people touting your product in the street. Now it's cheaper and more cost effective to target who you send an advert to. I think in the near future there is even talk of them paying people who match a certain demographic to watch an advert. A site you can purchase demographic data from is

You can also get financial reports about people from

I enjoyed reading this book which is a good book despite me knowing quite a lot about this subject already. It's an excellent introduction to this subject.
