Vitalogy - Pearl Jam
I am reviewing the album Vitalogy by Pearl Jam. They are one of the key bands of the grunge movement and although Kurt Cobain attacked them for being too commercial, they did reconcile their differences. They were formed in Seattle and did have a couple of other names before settling on Pearl Jam which they came up with after a concert they went where someone had done 15-20 jam versions of his songs. They are very much a live band doing epic concerts. Their second album VS was the fastest selling album in the USA at that time and Vitalogy became the second fastest. They were well known for not doing pop videos for their songs because they thought it spoilt the musical experience. They also boycotted a concert promoter called Ticketmaster who they felt were taking an unfair amount of commision from ticket sales without making it obvious to the buyers. This made it difficult for them to tour the States. They are also very green minded and promote a variety of ecological causes. Vitalogy came in a really nice kind of booklet which had a compartment for the cd. The group would have liked to have done 2-3 albums a year like their heroes The Who but were prevented by their record company. They are still an active group and now contain the drummer from the group Soundgarden who has been with them a while.
